Thunderbird 3, unlike version ,2 does not need an add-on application to make a connection to Google via IMAP

Start Mozilla Thunderbird and select Tools > Account settings :-

Click on Account Actions and select Add Mail Account :-

Enter Your Name, the name you would like to be known as.
Enter your main Email Address (
you@yourdomain.co.uk) as shown here.
Enter your Password and tick the remember box if you wish.

Press Continue:-

Press Manual Setup and go to the next screen where you will see the account has been crerated.

First you may, if you wish, change your Account Name to something like your name. You can leave it as your email address if you wish.

Click on Server Settings and you will see the screen below. There are three changes to be made on this screen:-

1) Change Server Name to imap.googlemail.com
2) change User name to your email address - you@yourdomain.co.uk
3) on the drop down that says STARTTLS select SSL/TLS. On selection, this will change the Port setting (above) to 993.

Next select Outgoing Server (SMTP) and you'll see the screen below:-

Highlight the setting created for you and press Edit. A small screen will pop up:-

In this box you can add a description if you like, it's up to you.
You need to change two items:-
1) change Server Name to
smtp.googlemail.com
2) change User Name to your
email address - you@yourdomain.co.uk

Make sure the box next to Use name and password (under Security and Authentication) is ticked.
Press OK

Press OK in the main screen and all should be ready.
